History of the Daypack from Rugged Material

“When I started RM I was mostly just doing phone cases and gun holsters. I was attending university and working swing shift at a factory. My wife and I lived 30 minutes away from the factory and further from the school. I had recently finished my first full moto rebuild on this ’77 Yamaha XS750 and was trying to commute with it as much as possible to keep my chevy pickup from eating through my wallet in with so much commuting each week. I rode this bike through all weather conditions. Which led to a few scares where it rained on me when I had my macbook in my Dakine pack and it got totally soaked through. I have this Waxed Cotton security jacket that I wear everywhere and it sheds water well. So I bought some waxed canvas from the same manufacturer that SchottNYC uses and started prototyping. It took 15 different prototypes to get it right.

The result is a bombproof leather and waxed canvas pack that never quits. I’ve tested it in canyoneering situations in the slot canyons of Zion National park and put a lot of time on the bike with it. And as tough as it is the design is meant to be somewhat understated and appropriate for school and work. We use a water resistant oversize zipper that pairs nicely with the waxed canvas. The straps are padded and have a sternum strap with a 3/4 inch aluminum buckle that can handle some serious abuse. All the hardware on the bag is either steel or aluminum. The bag sports a leather bottom so you can drop it on the ground all day everyday and not worry about wearing it out. Inside it has a laptop pocket and tablet pocket. Outside it has another compartment that measures 8x10x2 inches. Overall dimensions are 20 Liter capacity, dimensions 12″ x 5″ x 19″. I’ve used a camelback bladder in the laptop pocket with the hose coming out of the zipper for long rides and it works great.

By the time I finished this bag and priced it out it was going to cost $400 so I started looking for ways to make it more affordable without sacrificing quality. My solution was to sell it direct instead of sell to retailers. We set up a Kickstarter Campaign to see how the idea would work and so far it has been very popular as we have sold $45k in the first 15 days. The Waxed Daypack is made by hand in Southern Utah and Guaranteed for life! Its available in the black canvas with tan leather or in Charcoal Canvas with dark brown leather! If backpacks aren’t your style the waxed duffle or all leather messenger will fit you.” via Tyler Condie, Founder of Rugged Material
