“Clinton C. Filson opened C.C. Filson’s Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers in Seattle in 1897. His aim was to outfit prospectors of the Klondike Gold Rush with clothing suitable for extremely harsh conditions. His standards: comfort, protection and durability. The result: gear as tough as the men who wore it. Our newest achievement is a line of watches purpose-built for a lifetime outdoors. We partnered with Shinola, who hand-build our watches in their Detroit factory. We’re proud that our customers place their trust in us, and to honor that trust, our watches, like everything we sell, are guaranteed for life.”
Shinola built the first watch factory in Detroit and the first in the country in over 40 years. The Shinola factory is in the Argonaut Building, which once housed the GM designers responsible for the first fully automatic transmission and the first heart-lung machine. Here, watches are painstakingly hand-assembled in a 30,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. As a tribute, the quartz movement is named “Argonite.”
The watches are powered by Shinola’s Argonite movement. Assembled in the U.S. of Swiss parts, this quartz movement was chosen for its reliability and precision. They’ve encased the movement in stainless steel and secured the case back with six screws. With a screw-down crown, these rugged watches are water resistant to 200 meters/20ATM. An anti-reflective coating on the tough-as-nails sapphire crystal, along with hands and numbers printed with Swiss Super-LumiNova ink, maximizes readability day or night. With straps made of quality, durable materials like Filson Tin Cloth and Bridle Leather, standards proven over the past century, these watches are built for the outdoors with uncompromising quality to withstand the demands of the field.
Filson chose Shinola to make their watches because where things are built matters. Where we work defines what we make, and what we make is better for it. Their place in the Pacific Northwest inspires the best in us, and their environment, like our culture, demands superior products. Shinola shares the same bond with Detroit. No other town knows more about building machines, and only Shinola could build American watches that deliver on our uncompromising standards.
